Why credits matter
CGPA is a credit-weighted average. A semester with 26 credits pulls the CGPA harder than one with 20. Averaging course by course across all semesters (what this calculator does) gives the same answer as weighting each semester’s exact SGPA by its credits. If you use the SGPAs printed on your grade cards, which are rounded to two decimals, the result can differ in the second decimal.
The UGC worked example
The UGC’s CBCS guidelines illustrate CGPA with six semesters:

Frequently asked questions
How is CGPA calculated?
Add up credits × grade points for every course across all semesters and divide by the total credits. The UGC's CBCS guidelines give the equivalent semester form: CGPA = Σ(Ci × Si) ÷ ΣCi, where Si is each semester's SGPA and Ci that semester's total credits.
Is CGPA the average of my SGPAs?
Only if every semester has the same total credits. Otherwise each SGPA must be weighted by its semester's credits. In the UGC's own example, the weighted CGPA is 6.73 while a plain average of the six SGPAs would be 6.77.
What's the difference between this and the SGPA to CGPA calculator?
This one starts from individual courses, so it also shows each semester's SGPA. If you already have your SGPAs and semester credits from your grade cards, the SGPA to CGPA calculator is quicker.
Do failed courses count towards CGPA?
It depends on your university. VTU's 2021 regulations compute CGPA excluding courses with F grades, and Anna University R2021 excludes U grades; the UGC formula counts every course taken. Use the checkbox to match your rules.
