Your institution’s formula decides. There is no single national SGPA/CGPA-to-percentage formula in India. If your grade card, transcript or university regulations state a conversion, use that one (pick it above or enter it as a custom formula). When an employer or admissions form asks for a percentage, quote the formula you used and where it comes from, so they can check it.

Both the 2021 and 2022 regulations say the formula “may be used” for employment, higher studies and similar purposes, and both illustrate it with a CGPA of 8.20 → 82.0%. The 2021 text adds that “there is no formula for the conversion of CGPA into the percentage of marks” before giving this one, which is a fair summary of the whole subject.
A note on the 2021 draft
VTU also hosts a draft of the 2021 regulations in which the same clause reads M = [CGPA − 0.75] × 10 (8.20 → 74.5%). The final regulations VTU lists for the 2021 scheme replaced it with CGPA × 10. If you are in the 2021 scheme, use CGPA × 10.
Class equivalence (2022 regulations)
After converting the final CGPA to a percentage M, the 2022 regulations (clause 22OB 6.8) place a graduate in:
- First Class with Distinction: M ≥ 70
- First Class: 60 ≤ M < 70
- Second Class: 50 ≤ M < 60
- Pass Class: 40 ≤ M ≤ 50 (as printed)
VTU grade points
Under the 2022 scheme each course is graded O (10), A+ (9), A (8), B+ (7), B (6), C (5), P (4) or F (0), from 90–100, 80–89, 70–79, 60–69, 55–59, 50–54, 40–49 and 0–39 percent of marks respectively. What is the VTU formula to convert CGPA to percentage?
It depends on your scheme. VTU's 2022 and 2021 B.E./B.Tech. regulations give percentage = CGPA × 10. VTU's CGPA standard-formula page gives (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 for the 2015, 2017 and 2018 schemes only.
What percentage is 8.2 CGPA in VTU?
82.0% under the 2021 and 2022 schemes (VTU's own illustration: 8.20 × 10 = 82.0%), and 74.5% under the 2015, 2017 and 2018 schemes ((8.20 − 0.75) × 10).
Does the 2021 scheme use (CGPA − 0.75) × 10?
No. A draft of the 2021 regulations did show (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, which is probably why some websites still quote it, but the final 2021 regulations published by VTU (clause 21OB13.2) use CGPA × 10.
Can I use the VTU formula on my SGPA?
VTU's regulations define the conversion for CGPA. Applying it to one semester's SGPA gives an estimate for that semester, not an official figure.
Which class do I get in VTU?
The 2022 regulations classify on the converted percentage M: First Class with Distinction if M is 70 or more, First Class from 60 to below 70, Second Class from 50 to below 60, and Pass Class from 40 up to 50.
